Twice as many school children in Maplewood qualify for free lunch as do those living in South Orange. There are some decent areas in Maplewood heading from Maplecrest Park down to the junior high school but nothing compares to the opulence of some areas of South Orange.
Lived in Maplewood had many friends in South Orange went to Livingston High School spent most of my life in those areas.
The school system is regional both towns have decent schools but stay away from the areas that would have your kids go to Seth Boyden.

You may be right, but it doesn't matter. Both have fine school systems.
Depends how you measure it. South Orange has a higher median household income, which is the most often cited metric for “wealth.” However, Maplewood has a lower percentage of population living in poverty. These are according to the 2010 census from Wikipedia.

I.E. South Orange has more income inequality but more money overall, while Maplewood is more egalitarian but slightly less wealthy in totality.

Nobody is sending children to Maplewood South Orange schools by choice. The schools have plenty of funding, but like everything its always from the home and the people of the community arent the best we have to offer.

It seems like they’ll start integrating the schools and you won’t have a “zoned” elementary school going forward — they’ll send kids randomly to any one of the schools in Maplewood to level the playing field. I’m not sure there’s a way to avoid some schools…

Hmm. Thanks. Do people have a similar sentiment about schools in Montclair? Or is it similarly not so great in reality?

You ever listen to Public Enemy? As Flavor Flav says, “Don’t believe the hype.” The schools are perfectly fine (although, to be fair, Montclair has been embroiled in some controversy lately about the physical condition of some of its buildings).

So many differing opinions! I’m not sure what to think at this point :-)

i heard glen ridge has great schools too. Does that area have a friendly and liberal community? It’s sufficiently close to Montclair so maybe it’d be a good fit.

How about commute to NYC from Livingston? Looks like a lot of ways (bus, Park at Harrison Station, or city shuttle to Orange). Which is realistic?

Regional. That's what they do in ManalapanMarlboro/Freehold where my kids went to school.

Glen Ridge schools are great. The main problem is that there's nothing but residential for the tax base, so taxes are incredibly high as a result.

Friends there say every June there are two signs that appear on a lawn at the same time: Congratulations Graduate and For Sale.

We ended up in Cranford, which is a little further out from your original hour request, more like 70 minutes depending on where you're going. But nearby Westfield may also fit your budget just not your time schedule.
