I have a 2 year old driveway (moved into new house) and I'm looking to get it seal coated.
Have a few oil stains from car.
I got a quote from one company (5 star google reviews) for $500. Lady said they use an oil based sealcoat that is sprayed on. No need to wash/clean driveway (I find this odd). And the job takes 15-20 minutes. Recommends doing it every 1-2 years. Can use driveway after 24 hours.

So I start googling oil based vs. water based sealcoats and lots of conflicting information. So from what I've read oil based penetrates the asphalt and protects but doesn't really seal. Water based lays on top and seals. Oil based has more VOCs, longer time to cure, not environmentally friendly and banned in some states.

Any advice? Last winter was very cold with lots of snow and I'm sure I will start to see some damage in a couple years.

We had ours done last Saturday, and paid $600 for the oil based. It's a two car width, room for 3 deep, about 1,000 sf. The other quotes were similar or more, one was $1,500 and they included no repairs or pre-cleaning. There was a 4 week backlog, so I pressure washed myself, and got some caulk-gun crack filler at Home Deport, so it was crack-free when they sprayed it on. After 24 hours it was dry enough to drive on. They used an oil based product, which I prefer due to our wet climate (60" of rain). I don't know how long it will last, however.
