I guess New Jersey cannot afford free lunch to students up to High school vs NY giving out free lunch regardless of income.

What is your view on this?

My town chooses not to participate in the program.

The money comes from your tax anyway. Reducing tax and increasing government efficiency work much better than give the free lunch. Compared with TX, NJ's taxes were not so effectively and efficiently spent at all. See the contrast of children's playgrounds and water parks or swimming facilities if you are lucky to have one in your local recreational center.

JHC, this is what you worry about? All the stuff going on in the World , covid ,and this is what you want to gripe about?

Students aren't getting surf and turf for lunch , people need to back off the internet and settle down.

"All the stuff going on in the world" like an Afghan crisis and declining Covid.. We DO have First World problems here, but NJ has always been second-fiddle to NY, is that what you are getting at?

And what is JHC?

Just tell the kids to bring a lunch box with them to school. Probably healthier anyways

There are schools out in oil rich Texas that have cafeterias like a shopping mall. It has KFC, McDs, Whataburger, Panda Express etc etc.

I am a product of the Texas school system. I attended one of the best and wealthiest schools in Texas albeit I was a terrible student and I hated it. But that's another discussion.

My take is that NJ could afford it but they are not setup to...

Every little town seemingly has to own and run its own schools. That is a costly overhead. That also means every little town has to build partnerships with those that can cater food at that scale. That too is also costly.

In TX, they have ISDs... Independent School Districts. These district lines do not follow municipality boundaries. As a result, you don't have a superintendent that has 2-4 schools. You have an ISD superintended tens of schools. I just checked, my ISD's superintendent is responsible for 81 schools! Eighty-One Schools! Each ISD covers vast areas of different towns/cities. Because of their size, the cost is shared and they have more leverage. You know what? The super's salary in that ISD in Texas is not all that much different than the one in my town. My town has barely 20k residences. The big difference is that NJ has so many more superintendents than Texas; a lot more paychecks to write. That discrepancy is not just at the super level but trickles all the way down the chain of command.

NJ could afford it. We are a wealthy state. We are just not setup politically to do so.

Btw.. my school's cafeteria was as nice as some small mall cafeterias. The food wasn't too bad. However, the students still had to pay for it in cash. As a kid, I took my parent's lunch money and pocketed it. I paid a friend to make an extra sandwich for me cheap. This allowed for extra cash to spend on weekends. My friend also got a little extra (I guess his parents thought he just ate alot.. lol) Although I grew up in a wealthy area, my parents weren't rich. I was considered one of the poor kids... silly... because I had my own car. lol

All schools have a free lunch program available to those who qualify because of need.
