I know I shouldn't be surprised, but this just disgusts me. $50 bucks for one test...

A pharmacy in Paterson where I went to take my daughter for the COVID shot was charging $75 to do a rapid test.

Whoa. Because there aren't any home tests available?? I just ordered a package of 2 online for $30. The ones I've gotten at CVS were about $25 for 2. Why would anyone pay $75?

ETA: this was some bogus outfit out of someone's house. not even a pharmacy.

If you think that's bad, an "urgent care" facility in Central NJ is charging $165 for a rapid test, and they state that they will not submit a bill to one's insurance company. A couple of days ago, they were charging "only" $131.

Edited to add that my friend recently got the rapid test at another "urgent care" facility in Central NJ, where they submitted their billing to his insurance company, and he paid just his usual $15 co-pay.

Still doesn’t answer my question about why they’re not using the at home tests. They’re not totally useless and if you’re vaccinated and doing the usual protocols, why bother?

Some people need to be tested periodically to go to work. Tests are not always easy to find same day so I guess that’s what’s causing the price gouging.

Ok. Well in that case the employer should be providing the tests….. but okay. Universities are doing that, don’t see why employers can’t. But okay.

Isn't the original question 'Oxymoronic?'
  • Why does the Oil Industry sell Oil?
  • Why do Pharmaceutical companies sell Drugs?
etc., etc., etc.,...TO MAKE $ !

IF you knew you caught COVID....what good would that do you?

Unless you couldn't breathe, and developed horrible conditions, you'd end up staying home and doing anti-inflammatory drugs until your immune system beat it.

COVID is now endemic... Hope you are able to improve your immune system and beat it off (like the flu and other viruses that we must live with).

Why panic and spend UN-necessary funds on Testing that will do you 'no bit of good...?'

There are two different types of tests, the PCR and the (rapid) antigen test.
Here is an explanation of the two types of tests:
https://www.umassmed.edu/news/news-a...covid-19-test/

The tests that are done at home are PCR tests, they are sent away via UPS, FedEx, or the USPS for processing, and the total time before you receive your results is--at a minimum--4 days.

The rapid antigen tests are needed for those--like my friend--who are healthcare providers, or those who are traveling. One would think that hospitals would provide this service for their workers, but not all of them do so. Hence, healthcare workers--like him--have to pursue rapid testing at their own expense.
