In view of the grim opiate/opioid addiction statistics for Ocean County, I hesitate to recommend it for anyone with kids.
A few years ago, The New Jersey Department of Human Services published a report on the "top 20" municipalities in the state for heroin and opiate abuse. You might be shocked that it wasn’t Essex County, Hudson County, or even Camden County that had the most towns on the list — it was Ocean County.
While I had heard that there were a lot of heroin and prescription drug cases at the Superior Court in Toms River, it came as a surprise that so many towns in Ocean County were ranked in the top 20 in NJ for serious addiction issues. The following is a list of those Ocean County towns, their rank in the state for drug problems, and the number of heroin cases.
Brick Town (6th) with 550 cases
Toms River (8th) with 512 cases
Lacey (11th) with 280 cases
Jackson (12th) with 277 cases
South Toms River (17th) with 202 cases
When you consider that Brick was once ranked among the nation's safest towns, it is even that much more surprising that it now ranks sixth in NJ in terms of heroin and opiate abuse. Toms River--which once enjoyed the accolade of being one of the best places to retire in the nation--now bears the stain of being the eighth worst in NJ in terms of heroin. And how about the Pinelands community of Lacey Township ranking eleventh?
If you look at the two highest cases, Brick Town and Tom's River, the cases amount to less than 1% of their populations. Drug use in the suburbs is not like it is in the city. People are not selling dope on corners. People are not mugging people to get money for drugs. More than 99% of people are not addicted to heroin/opioids. It's more of a private problem. I've known a couple of former heroin/opioid addicts, and if they didn't tell you, you would never have known it.

NJ isn't much cheaper than NY, same type of political operators running these states. Consider leaving the north east all together for a different better run state.
