if you’re working at Wagner, you’re stuck crossing the island. You’ll be better off living near 78 or close to another route that can take you to Elizabeth.
In that case, then the OP should look into Springfield. It's not as desirable as most of Bridgewater, but it would be a much more do-able commute.
In Staten Island I work closer to the Expressway more near Wagner College than the South Shore. Would taking the Goethals and 78 be a better option than 287?
I have two small children so my main interests when looking into a town are schools / community feel / things for the kids to do - good sports program/ community pool.
Probably so. Sounds like Cranford might be your best option.
Taking 78 would result in heavier morning and evening traffic, but as long as there are no accidents you should be ok until you get to Staten Island, than it's dealing with the SIXPWY, and as you probably already know there are no easy ways to get to Wagner on the local streets from that side of the Island. You would have to learn some side street shortcuts to dink and dunk out of.
