And so is Union City! Despite there being a Union County…which does have a Union Twp…but so does Hunterdon County.

And, both Hunterdon County and Somerset County have a "Raritan". It was even more confusing before the Raritan in Middlesex County changed its name to Edison.

Can’t forget Washington Township in Gloucester County, Washington in Warren County, and Township of Washington in Bergen County

There are also Washington Townships in Burlington and Morris Counties. Warren County actually has both a Washington Twp and a Washington Borough. And Robbinsville in Mercer County also used to be Washington Twp until they changed the name in 2008.

There used to be three Shrewsburys, all next to one another.

A large swath of what is now Monmouth County was once Shrewsbury Township, formed in 1693. Eventually towns broke off over time, and one of them became the Borough of Shrewsbury, which was right next to the remains of Shrewsbury Township. Then the Borough of Shrewsbury further split into New Shrewsbury. That lasted about 25 years, I think, from about 1950 to 1975 when the Post Office had enough and demanded somebody change their name. New Shrewsbury became Tinton Falls.

The Township and Borough remain. Shrewsbury Township, which was once such a large area, is now the smallest town in New Jersey in area, about a tenth of a square miles, although not in population, which is just around 1200. There are no single family homes, just a garden apartment complex, a townhouse community, and a co-op of about 200+ units that was once part of the military housing for nearby Fort Monmouth.
