Hi- planning on a 3-5 day visit to ocean city, nj for first time. Have an 8 year old plus 1 elderly person. Was looking at house rentals. Then thought maybe a hotel might work too. May be more convenient (cleaning/parking/pool). Also hotels may have common areas where the elderly guest can hang out on the days where they didnt want to leave the premises.
Not sure what the hotels are like though in ocean city. Are they more like "motels"? Is better to find a house rental? We dont need "luxury" but do want it fairly nice.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

There are nice hotels in Ocean City, and also condo buildings that operate as hotels that have the benefits of a condo (kitchen etc) but also a pool and other amenities. The Flanders hotel operates that way, but that is $$$. Port-O-Call on the boardwalk is also nice but also kind of $$. Decent restaurant. Both those are "hotels" many others are more like motels, but that doesn't mean they aren't nice. There are some cheaper hotels that won't have the niceties of Port-O-Call, etc but are more budget-friendly, like the Impala and Ocean Manor. A smaller but very nice one with a pool right on the boardwalk is The Beach Club. It's an awesome location, and I think it's better than hotels like Flanders because I don't want to walk through a fancy lobby in my bathing suit nor wait for elevators every time I go back to the room to get something. My niece and her husband used to like Watson's Regency hotel in the off season because they are the only hotel with an indoor pool as well as outdoor. There are just so many! I would go by price and location personally. If you want to be walking distance of the boardwalk, the stores and amusements run from 5th street to 14th street. If you get a hotel say at 34th street you'll still have to get transported to the BW. BUT they have a trolley, so you might be able to save money doing that.

Some of the smaller 2-story hotels might require stairs, so make sure they can give you a first floor for your elderly guest. Many if the houses will require stairs even for first floor because they are raised, so if that matters make sure.

If you can find a rental in a condo like Gardens Plaza (on the Boardwalk) there is a nice pool area and a LOT of retirees that live there.

Houses rent by the week late spring through late summer. I've never vacationed there, but I'm pretty sure that there are both motel and hotel type places. Hopefully the woman who lived there for years will find this thread tomorrow.

* Yay! I knew that you would eventually get here.
