Yes, this was back in the 1960s and early '70s. (ADA didn't come along until the early '80s.)

As one of my sisters says, "If I see someone who isn't handicapped parking in a handicapped spot, I offer to help them become handicapped so they have the right to use it."

Of course we know that some people's handicaps aren't visible. Even my father got a snide remark about how they give those spots to just anyone that day, unaware that he was walking on two artificial legs. He just smiled at her and said "My handicap is mental" and went on in to the store.

He lost his legs fighting in a war so that you have the right to say whatever stupid thing comes into your head, lady.

But back to people who misuse the spots--my Girl Scout co-leader had a severely handicapped son, and so she had the placard, and she would park in handicapped spots even if her son wasn't with her. This annoyed my young daughter, because she knew it wasn't right. I remember her getting upset about it and telling me after she was out with her and her daughter one day.

I am proud to say I never once used my mother's handicapped placard that was in my car for 15 years. I considered it only once, during a snowstorm when I was trying to find parking at the High Speed Line station, because half the commuters decided to take the train due to the snow. But I was afraid of Karma!

She didn't answer but I suppose it might have taken him longer to maneuver into the spot than the average driver.

Because we would be an aisle or two away from it, and by the time he drove over to the spot, someone else would have taken it. This way we could run through the parked cars to the spot and get there first and claim it while he pulled the car around.

No, the answer was that we were standing up looking out the windows to try and spot a space that might be over an aisle or two. We had to beat the other cars.

You're going to see a whole lot of inconsiderate driving all over and around the Shore etc... Summer is here.

This seems to be a universal thing.

Yes, the NY plates have returned along with the influx from Morris County.
I’m grateful the Memorial Day weekend is over.

One could only wish! I have no idea what the handicap parking requirement laws are (if they are town + state ordinance), but they are certainly overkill, especially at convenience stores. There's a 711 in New Milford I used to regularly frequent with only 2 parking spaces, 1 of those spaces were for the handicap. Some Wawa's have 4-5 handicap spaces right in the front, which imo is unnecessary.

I got a ticket years and years ago for parking in a handicapped space at a 24 hour Pathmark in Turnersville at 1:00 a.m. I worked 4-midnight then and shopped after work. I did park in one of the MANY handicapped spots, only because it was 1am and dark, and the handicapped spots were lit well and closer to the store. I couldn't believe it when I came out to the ticket! Was it really likely that 10 handicapped drivers were going to show up at 1am and not have a place to park because I took one of the spots?

That is ridiculous, theres a time and place to give a ticket like that, and that wasnt the time.
