OVP in Middletown. Liquor store with dive bar in back.

I hung out in a place like that when I was 20 or so. They have some greasy food, too.

There's a liquor store in Highlands on 36 on the way to Sandy Hook with a u-shaped bar in the middle. I stopped in when I got back 4 years ago, and after 31 years, the only thing that had changed was the TV.

I used to like Sal's in Red Bank. Remember when you couldn't buy beer there to go on Sunday unless you brought your own container. Spent some afternoons in the Globe bar drinking with the old timers out of the 6 oz beer glasses. They probably have flat screen TV's by now.

I don't know if it's still true, but when I used to work Sunday brunch as a bartender, people would get pissed when they had to wait till Noon for their Bloody Mary's. Good times

Dave Portnoy did a review of the place a couple years ago. He goes into the bar in the review for reference, sure there are places that are divier, but hits the points of what a dive bar is. Id say its one step up that its cleaner than most, and has a menu as its connected to the restuarant.

He actually gave them an 8.1.

Also, Yelp has them as #2 dive bar in the area behind PK Shamrocks which has now changed names/ gone out of business.
