I’m on my way back from a work trip to Rochester. There and back in one day. Charging time is gonna be about 1:30. $60 give or take. Self-driving most of the way. No brainer. I will never go back.

$60 to drive 682 miles is 1/2 or better the cost of gas, depending on your car’s fuel efficiency. A 25mpg car at $4.30 would spend $118 for the same trip. Forget about when we were up over $5.
That’s not significant? Also keep in mind, charging at Level III’s on the road is far more expensive than home charging. It costs me about $20 to get the same amount of miles at home. Only on roadtrips does electric become remotely close to gas prices. My total electric bill was $206 last month: daily home use, AC blasting 24/7, AND my car. I used to spend $250-300 every month just on gas.

The more you drive, the bigger the savings, obviously. But using your numbers, that’s almost a month of driving for me. Saving $58 a month doesn’t offset the price. You could triple that number and it wouldn’t offset the price. It would still be much cheaper to buy a $35k gas car than a 60k EV. Prices would have to come down a lot for me to seriously consider one ( and if gas prices ever return to below $3 I wouldn’t even consider it).
Well of course, if you barely drive and aren’t in the $50k+ market by choice, switching to save $60 a month wouldn’t be smart. But… there are EV’s that come in far below $50k. The Leaf, Kona, Bolt can be had for under $35k before any rebates. And keep in mind, NJ right off the bat does not charge sales tax on EV’s. A comparable ICE BMW in my price range would’ve added $3500 to the cost in sales tax alone.

Yup. We're still hanging on with a 220,000 mile, 2005 vehicle and praying nothing goes wrong that my husband can't fix.

Unless an EV can be had for $4,000, that $4,000 subsidy isn't going to matter for us. You're talking about tens of thousands of dollars. The people who could most use the savings are those who can't afford the cars.

Although wealth is distributed in very varied ways, there is no doubt that we have a lot of affluent people in NJ. On a typical day, I see 3 or 4 Maserati sedans and/or sports coupes, plus several Porsches. The Mercedes sedans are almost too numerous to count. A couple of times, I have seen the same McLaren parked in West Windsor.
Just yesterday I saw a Ferrari and two Bentley convertibles. Those two marques cost more than most folks spent on their first home.
I know a guy who drives a Porsche and lives with his mom. You can’t judge people’s wealth by what they drive
