True but for some reason the majority of hoaxes seem to involve Blacks.
I assume the 7,000 reported crimes covers a variety of races/cultures gays, straights and both men and women.
It would be nice to know how they all panned out.
Of course I don't want to treat rape victims suspiciously. Who does?
That said, I think hoaxers should suffer serious consequences (they never seem to) given the serious damage they do to real victims just for their own self aggrandizement.
Agree with your last paragraph, however I think we’re getting into dangerous territory when we are going to start off assuming people are lying whenever they report mistreatment.
So, anecdotal evidence. Maybe it's 150 to 200 times.
Was your data gathered from 38 years as a Black man in NJ or various regions of the US?
We're all free to use whatever type of math we like to support one's side of an argument.
Again, are you including attacks on Asians, Jews and other minorities in your "100 real ones" calculation?
I was just curious about your methodology of determining and presenting something as exact as mathematical data, especially when it comes to quantifying and repairing serious social issues.
I guess you fail to detect hyperbole. I don’t know if it’s ACTUALLY 100 racist incidents for each hoax. But nearly every minority I know has had a story where at the very least they’ve been called a racial slur at some point in their lives. But hey, if you think we can go back and forth with hoaxes vs actual racist incidents in the history of the US and that I’ll run out of the examples before you do then have at it!
Of course I would include Asians and Jewish folks. And Arabs and Indians and anyone else who fits the bill. No one is exempt, even if I do feel black and brown people bear the majority of it (and before you ask, no I don’t have stats to back this claim, just something I concluded based on ::gasp:: anecdotal evidence from my interaction with folks from many walks of life.
And to be clear, I think it’s disgusting when people pretend to be discriminated against. I think a lot of us were suspicious of the Jussie Smolet BS from the beginning, but of course nobody talks about that. I just don’t believe in condemning an entire group for the actions of a select few.

I have probably been called the n-word to my face more time than you, and I'm white (and Native). Black teenagers use that word continually and I taught them for 3 decades.

Nearly all black people have been the victims of racial slurs, discrimination and profiling. I used to hang out with my old supervisor who is black when I worked at casino. Just going into a store with her was a different experience than when I went alone (I.e. they watched IOU’s like hawks). Once when I suggested we go to a local bar near where we lived, she said “I don’t think I’d be welcome there” and when I thought about it I realized she was probably right (blue collar all while clientele).
That IS the black experience for many in this country. Racism has not ended
As for the hoax, even the article linked written by the guy writing about hoaxes, he only found a little more than 5% were hoaxes, and he was actively looking for hoaxes.
Being called the N word happens all the time to CNAs in the nursing home I work in (by patients). In a facility I worked in years ago, an elderly southern belle was mad because the aide was putting her in the shower and so she started loudly singing an old plantation song about slaves that was highly insulting. And the aide has to just take it and not say anything.

I think that has probably been the experience of most--if not all--dark-skinned people in The US. My closest friend is a dark-complected Filipino who is most often assumed to be of Hispanic origin. When he first mentioned to me that he is often treated differently from lighter-skinned folks, I thought he was exaggerating. Then, after accompanying him to several stores, I saw that he was describing things accurately.
If we enter a store separately, he is often followed around the store, but if we enter together, that type of surveillance doesn't seem to happen. The most offensive part is when he is asked for I.D. if he uses a credit card. That has never happened to me, but it has happened to him on several occasions--while I observed from a distance. Then, when I approached the same cashier, I was not asked for any proof of identity when I used a credit card.
