I've been thinking about moving to NJ with a friend who currently works in Flanders, but lives in Brooklyn. My friend's only concern is the time spent driving - he'd like to keep it around 30min or less. I live in Astoria and work in Manhattan, and wouldn't mind taking the train or Amtrak to get to work from NJ as long as the station is within walking distance (10min or so). As for the type of place to rent, I think anything with two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a full bath will suffice.
My questions are:
1. What counties should I be looking into most specifically? A friendly, safe neighborhood is definitely sought after. Access to restaurants and shopping within walking distance is a huge plus.
2. Price range is another concern. My friend is on a tight budget, so would it be possible to find something in the 1k or less range? Say 800+? Just throwing out numbers he suggested here, and I have no clue about the general price range in NJ.
3. I've never lived in NJ (grew up on LI, then rented in Astoria for the last couple of years), nor has my friend, so are there specific things we should keep an eye out for when checking out apartments?
Assuming you guys are young adults, I'd recommend Morristown. It's a nice town with some good bars and restaurants in a downtown with a village green at its center. It's about 30 minutes from Flanders, and there's an NJTRANSIT train station, from which you could get to Penn Station in Manhattan (the train trip is about an hour). It's not cheap, though. Do you want TWO bedrooms for 800??? Or are you talking 800-1000 each (1600-2000 for a 2BR)? Look at craigslist to get an idea of the types of places available in different price ranges.
Yes, we are in our 20's, and although some recreational establishments would be nice, I hang out mostly in Manhattan or Queens. As for my potential roommate, he likes to hang out in Brooklyn mostly.
I think 800 might be too low for a 2BR, but would 1000 be a reasonable number (My friend is on a really tight budget)? Considering it's about 1400ish in Astoria and 1200ish in Flushing, Kew Kardens, I thought it might be possible to find something in that range in NJ. Again, this was all speculation on my part.
I did some research on Craigslist in the Central Jersey section, but the price range changes so much, it was hard to get a right gauge (900 to 1500?). I'll definitely look into Morristown.
After looking into Morristown's listings, I think a 2BR apt would fall well out of my friend's budget range. So if we were to move even further west, are there places that boast of a train station still within walking distance from an apt?
