I want to install a new heating system. I have oil heat. My present furnance is not working properly, it's very old. Does anyone know of the going rate for this type of work and can you refer a good company?

There is no going rate. Best advice is to get estimates from as many hvac people as possible. When I replaced my boiler last fall the estimates were from $4,800 to $12,000 for essentially the same system.

Forced hot air?

You have gas in the house? I would convert if feasible, you're going to get hammered with oil IMO.

I just had my entire HVAC system replaced for 6200 and PSEG gave me a 500 dollar rebate on that.

15 SEER air conditioning and 94% efficiency furnace. My bill hasn't approached 200 bucks yet, when it was almost always 230 - 260 during heating or AC seasons.

If you can convert to natural gas, RUN dont walk. The difference in ROI is probably 2 years or less if not 1 year or less.

You are going to hear some ugly ugly stories this winter about families with say 50K income in the NE US who cant afford to heat their homes.

I JUST did this 1.5 months ago (I actually took the step to convert to gas from oil as well). To replace my above ground oil tank alone was going to run me in the neighborhood of 2-3K. To replace my oil HVAC system probably 4-5K more & then I converted to gas & after all said & done (all permits etc.) it cost me 9K. Since we did all of this in the Spring we REALLY haven't had a chance to see what monthly heating bills are going to run us but we had a maintenance & budget plan with our old crappy system that ran us close to 400 per month for all 12 months...it was CRAZY (we live in 1600 sq ft ranch). I can't imagine us not seeing a dramatic improvement this winter...good luck (by the way these prices are from the Morris Cnty area)

I suggest you replace it with a natural gas furnace. A good efficiency gas furnace might cost $5,000, total switch is probably close to $10,000. Probably worth every penny. It's also going to be a bigger and bigger issue for resale. People are simply not going to buy homes on oil heat at $135+/gallon. Switch now, save now and later down the road.
