Hey how are you guys today. Great site, very informative. I'm from south jersey and will be going to school at UMDNJ in Newark. I plan on moving by August, so I've been looking around for a few places and have seen a few places. It'll be me, my GF, and my little dog.
I would like some recommendations of places to live. Max rent we are willing to pay is about 1600. I've been looking for places and its kind of hard to find nice living that allows a dog and safety. The only place that maybe appealed to me in Newark are the Eleven 80 apartments. The price is @ 1600 for a studio @ ~600sqft. For, the price, it's pretty small, and my GF doesn't think it's worth it, but is literally 5 minutes from school.
Anyway, I've looked into other surrounding cities, Kearny, Oranges, Ironbound in Newark, JC, Belleville, Bloomfield, Hobokin, but haven't really found anything to my likings. I'm looking for preferably a apartment that offers some safety and parking. If anyone can make recommendations, please do so.
Also anyone familiar with 133 maple in West Orange (133maple.com)? I was told west orange I should not live in but this apartment looks nice... i suppose
I think you could find a studio in hoboken for that price. The building you're looking at in NEwark is supposed to be nice, but I wouldn't want to live there at this point. Hoboken is much safer and it has bars and restaurants and great nightlife. Newark is a ghost town at night. Parking is a big issue in hoboken, but if you can deal with it, I'd definitely recommend it over Newark.
If you're set on newark and being very close to school, I think you're better off in the Ironbound or in Harrison.
Thanks jersey. I'm not set on Newark, just as long as im within 20 minutes of school, and no further... The parking thing is tough too since both my GF and I will have a car... I've looked into hobokin, but man.. everything seems to be 2000+...

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks a lot!
That would be 133 Maple in EAST Orange.
East Orange is quite a different community from West Orange.
Since you asked how I feel about it, I'll tell you: I would not feel safe living in that neighborhood. That's me. Other people may or may not feel safe there.
There are many reasons why renovated 2BR condos in East Orange sell in the $130s while non-renovated condos in West Orange sell for twice that.
The links provide a lot of data about the towns. Check the stats, talk to the neighbors and local corner-store keepers. That will help you make an informed decision.
For the money you're willing to spend, I think you could do much, much better. I'd recommend that you try one of the apartment complexes off Belleville Avenue in Bloomfield or the Forest Hill section of Newark.
thanks for the advice maverick, maybe ill pass on that..
how about downtown jersey city? is there a lot of traffic right by the holland tunnel? im looking around and doesnt seem like i can afford anything by the waterfront.. lol
I understand you want to live nearby school but Newark isn't the safest or nicest place to live (trust me, I was raised there). I would consider finding an apartment in South Orange. You can take a bus or drive straight down S. Orange Avenue that would lead you to school. That should only take 15-20 minutes. The Ironbound section of Newark is a better environment however parking is limited and tight. South Orange/Orange borderline would probably be your cheapest and best bet.
the only apartment that i would stay in if i lived in newark would be the 1180's... i will look into south orange right now.. this is tough...
