the house we looked at was a couple of homes down from a boarded home
Sounds scary. If you post your price range and the general area you're looking in, I'm sure some folks will chime in with areas to check out that don't sound so crime ridden.

our budget is 300k and we were looking in rahway...as far as i know its not crime ridden more run down looking than crime ridden but they are pumping money into the down town so hopefully it will come around in the next 5 to 10 years.

we are not just taking his word...it seemed to me that starter home was a relative term and that for the area we were looking in it would be considered so

My brother is, in a condo a block from the station. I've lived next to Rahway for years, went to St. Mary's for CCD actually, and used to party with friends there all the time. I still go to the Waiting Room here and there, one of my gf's friend's lives there, and I meet up with my brother there too.

Its not Westfield, but its still a good place to live imho

The Waiting Room is a great bar with some tasty bar food...

With all the work going on downtown, you'll find plenty to eat and check out there, plus easy access to NYC. Might even want to keep your home when you get around to an upgrade, and rent it out instead.. its an option my brother is considering right now
