Diners are such a Northeastern thing, it's great. It was a part of our teenage culture, growing up. NJ is definitely the diner capital ... way ahead of Long Island.

Saddle Brook Diner is really, really good (but is too "nice"...doesn't have that classic diner feel).

Brownstone Diner in downtown Jersey City is also great, but is too "nice" inside.

The Cranford Diner in Cranford (across from train station) is good, and has that classic diner feel.

I had many shakes and burgers at the Cranford Diner ( many MANY moons ago).

The Cranford Hotel however used to have GREAT burgers. Do they still?

Anyone familiar with the Lynwood Inn in Linden? I know I know it's not a diner but I remember many years ago they had super gigantic sandwiches.

Gettin old........er haha

The name of the establishment is MASTORIS, not Mastori's (sic).

Why do people frequently convert this fine old Greek name to a possessive form of a (possibly) Italian name?

the Edison Diner on Rt1 South is good.
the Menlo Park is ok, used to be better.
The Reo in Woodbridge is good, homey, good baked goods.
the Americana in Eatontown.
the Blue Swan in Ocean Township on Rt35 s.
the Skylark on Rt 1 North (in Edison?) is good but prices are higher than a regular diner.
the Red Rose Systems in Highland Park is cool, but the burgers are greasy.
to me, the many Cracker Barrel Restaurants around the country have old-fashioned diner food, and are consistent and fun.

You wouldn't consider them to be fun if you were one of the scores of employees dismissed by that chain because managers perceived them to be...shall we say...non-heterosexual. A class-action suit found that Cracker Barrel had actively discriminated against employees, based on managers' perceptions of their sexuality.

To me, that is the antithesis of a "fun" place.
To me, it sounds Gulag-like in its oppressive workplace atmosphere.

Yes, Tom Sawyer is IMO so much better than before. Everything I've tried there since it reopened has been good. Love their steak salad, yum!!
