I love the NJ shore but it is SUCH a rip off!
Last year the family and I flew to Miami Beach, stayed in a GORGEOUS hotel on the Ocean and rented a car... ALL for less than a week down the shore in a crap motel would have run us... sickening.
Unless you're willing to travel all the way to Wildwood or Cape May (both of which have a pretty good collection of hotels), you aren't going to find much that you would even be willing to spend a night in, nevermind anything affordable.

True season counts, but even in February... if you are talking a nicer hotel in Cape May...prices are still up there. We went in early June and it's not really bad hurricane season yet - and it was awesome.
Stay a block or two from the beach in many towns and you will save a bundle. Also stay between Monday to Thursday nights. One of the best secrets is to gamble a little bit in one of the casinos in AC on the ocean and in a couple of weeks they will send advertisements for free rooms.
