Hi everyone! I'm moving from Indiana to NJ, probably Morristown or around that area and would like to know how much I should plan on spending on rent, utilities, etc??? I'm going to rent a one bedroom/bathroom apartment and would like an estimate if someone has an idea!!! thanks!!
For Morristown you are looking at between $1,100 and $1,300 for a 1 bedroom apartment. For a studio in Morristown you will be paying closer to $1,000.
Utilities can be expensive in this area. The power bill for a one bedroom apartment is usually around $60 per month for me. Cable and highspeed internet is each about $40 per month ($80 together). Phone bill is about $30 bill per month.
In a lot of apartments the bill for water and cooking gas is included in the rent, so you don't have to pay for it. You should check this out before signing a lease.
You will likely have to get a car as well, to commute to your job and whatnot, and that is going to add up, generally at least $200 per month for a lease. You can try to save money by purchasing an older used car, however you will still have to pay insurance on the car and that is very expensive in NJ (and the price of insurance varies greatly per person, it can be anywhere from around $500 with bare bones coverage for a person with no accidents up to the $2,500 range for heavy coverage and driving infractions).
Since I grew up and moved away from NJ 35 years ago, I absolutely love to come back, get a good slice of pizza, a great sub at Riddle & Martin's in South River, or The White House in Atlantic City, enjoy a day at the beach, and then I get to leave.
