Hi, my bathtub and toilet in my first floor bathroom clog if you flush the toilet and then use the shower or vice versa...they eventually (after an hour) work again. What is going on? How can I fixt this?

Thanks!

Can anyone recomend a plumber?

Old house? My guess.. the piping is too small. Older homes typically had that 2-inch diameter copper piping for their toilet/sink/tub discharge waters. Code is now 4-inch minmum. Other thing may be a 90 rather than 45's in the piping system.

Or they may not be properly vented...or vented at all.

Default Something to try

The abovementioned answers are probobly correct, however something simple and inexpensive to try that _can_ help is:

The piping may be effectively narrowed by means of long term accumulation of sludge and pipe smeg.... sorta like plumbing atheroschlerosis....

Dump some drain opener down the shower and sink drain. let it sit and then run the water.

May not do much, then again, it may..... worth a try.

Thanks. The house was built in 1950....the tub just backed up when I was running the washer too!

If this is new behavior for the house, I'd bet on the clogged pipe theory. Got any big trees in the front yard???

I'm not sure. I just moved in a few weeks ago. There were some trees...they are gone now.

Well, it's not so much the trees but their roots that could pose a problem...

There were some old stumps when I bought the place. I had them grinded out. I wonder if something was damaged in the process?
