We are looking to move out of Brooklyn (and stop wasting money on rent ) and trying to find out about good places to live in in terms of safety/commute to NYC/school system/shopping/etc.
We've started looking in North Edison following advise of our friends who just moved over there. Everything seems to be perfect except... prices. It looks like we'll have to compromise longer commute vs. lower price. So our next consideration is North Brunswick.
I would really appreciate if anybody who lives in N Brunswick gives us some pointers re: the commute (both my hubby and I work in Downtown NYC - high priority), school system, what it's like to live there generally. Also, it would be great if anyone cares to share other great places in Jersey to start the family and live happily.
Again, I would appreciate any relevant feedback. We are getting desperate here. Thanks.
I used to commute from Princeton Jct, one stop from the New Brunswick train station, to the WTC. Door-to-Door, the commute was about 1:35 minutes using the Amtrak Express Train. It took about 8 minutes to get from NB to Princeton, so figure that your trip would be that much shorter. The key to a good commute is catching the express trains which only make 4 stops between Princeton and Newark, where you take the PATH to WTC.
550k you can buy a home in Manalapan/Marlboro/Morganville and commuting to brooklyn is about an hour to hour and 15 min.....You can try Old Bridge too but You arent going to get alot for your money there...
I'm skeptical of the hour commute to Brooklyn from Manalapan. I work in Brooklyn and the person next to me lives in Marlboro - the commute is 1:40 according to him. I live in North Jersey, about 12 miles from Newark and 30 exits up the parkway from Monmouth, and my commute takes at least 1:15
Why not look in Woodbridge? One town over from Edison, three train stations with direct routes to NYC (45-55 minutes), good schools, and plenty of homes under $550k- both newer and older.
If you live in marlboro or manalapan u can take route 9 to garden state parkway it takes me about 15 min to the parkway from there and then it takes me another 20 to get to staten island where my sister lives and then from there depending on where in brooklyn you are working it can take u another 20-25 minutes...my friend commutes every day to brooklyn from manalapan off of route 9 and it takes him about an hour-to hour an 15 minutes...My other friend lives in brooklyn off of ocean ave I live in Jackson now and it takes her 1 hour and 30 min and Im 20 min from manalapan route 9 area, and 15 minutes to western monmouth....however either way its a touch commute, however there is always a Trade Off...
Guys, thanks for all the responses. The only thing is we'd be commuting from North Brunswick to Downtown Manhattan (not Brooklyn)...
