Hi, I'm new to this and have been reading what people think about JC. I am in need of an apartment and while areas are mentioned "downtown" "heights" etc. I am unclear where certain streets lay. I was going to look at an apt on Astor Pl, by Summit Ave. Can anyone please tell me if this is an ok area. I'm a single female with 2 small dogs who is looking for a clean and affordable apartment and right now the place where I am at is awful!!

Dana, that spot is near The Hill, a notoriously bad area. I would not recommend that area for a single female. That whole neighborhood is quite sketchy.

Ok, thank you so much! I am in a situation where I really can't afford more than $1200 monthly everything included for rent if by the train. Could you recommend areas by some street names etc. that would help me. I need a clean and safe place that will let me have my two small dogs, and is accessible to stores and transportation. I commute into midtown Manhattan everyday. Unfortunately I relocated here from upstate NY and the bldg I am in has a problem with bugs that i was not aware of so I am skeeved out and horribly upset beyond belief and it takes me an hour and a half to get to work each day! So far I'm not very happy with my experiences here!! Any help for someone in my situation would be so greatly appreciated!!

$1200 monthly budget wont get you a clean/safe area sorry to say. Most of JC will have roaches and mice, regardless of area. I was paying double that and had both.

you can probably share a 2BR apartment in newport or exchange place with $1200 budget - would be much cleaner and closer to Path

For $1200 you'll be able to get something in Journal Square, which is a little sketchy but safer than the first place you mentioned. Look on craigslist, the listings will say Journal Square.

Why not just not live in JC. Is it because you want to be close to NYC?

I had not only 2 BR, but 1.5 bath with off street parking in a town on the train line to NYC for $1100 (Hawthorne).
