If your first question is whether to rent or to buy, i would rent. I believe that prices in the Princeton area are still going down, and will be for another year, at least. So, depending on the rent you'd have to pay, you may save money by renting. Also, renting gives you a chance to "test drive" that community to see if you like it.
As far as what it's like to live there (gangs, pollution, etc.), i have no personal experience, but i believe that it's a pleasant place to live.
Montgomery woods is in the southern part of montgomery on the princeton border. There is limited crime in montgomery. Monty woods is a very quiet community. In my experience there is a large diverse population but most live there because of the school district. I agree with the other poster that said to rent first. Try out the area. There is a lot of traffic there.

I agree, my SIL and niece lived there for several years - great place, no crime, established. You shouldn't hesistate to live there if you're concerned about noise, crime, etc....it's a really nice place.
I didn't find the traffic to be all that bad, just at the intersection of 518/206.
