If you don't know live in in the Ironbound section you can't really know if people feel like outsiders, I been living in the Ironbound for 18 years and never been assaulted, my house was never broken into and my car never gotten stolen, the schools are very good, Ann St. School it's actually a Blue Ribbon School. The only thing is the High School sucks because they sent all the garbage down from the north. Also the there are so many different cultures there, portuguese, brazilian, hispanic, spaniards and even african-american. And by the way i'm portuguese and I SPEAK ENGLISH.
My Da, (mi Padre), actually grew up on Napoleon Street.
I have spent many a dollar in each any restaurant. From Cafe Italia, Brasilia, Iberia, to Tony Deccanecca's,(sp) and Tio Pepe's. I worked in Newark for many years. Once, I went to lunch with my boss, and we were serenaded by a violinist, we both left laughing, since, we were both married at the time, and spent the afternoon talking "business".
To answer the original question, it's called Ironbound as it's border is by railroad tracks, thus, "ironbound". The main tracks run along McCarter Hwy, the ironbound section being east of that.
I originate from Newark from years back. I believe the Ironbound Section, like the North and West Wards were predominately Italian. The West Ward where I came from is shot, but the North Ward and Ironbound now is predominantly Portuguese and kept it nice unlike the rest of Newark.
We visit the Ironbound Section to go to the Portuguese Restaurants. We like "Fornos" among others and I've been to other Portuguese Restaurants around, nothing beats Newark. Haven't been there in a while but when we went, parked in their lot and seemed very safe. Thanks to the Portuguese for keeping up the area.
