In NJ, the speed limit in highway is 55 mph (88 km/h) which is too slow.
Well, most European countries has 110 or 120 km/h (68 or 74 mph) as speed limit, and 55 is well too low. It should be increased to 65 mph.

Default Bad idea

Driving at 55 is bad for the economy because most cars get their best mileage at 55 and that is not good for the gas station and oil business. People driving at 55 and maintaining the required space between other cars is not good for the body shop and towing companies.
Your suggestion is not good for the auto business, nobody is going to be buying new cars if the old ones are in good condition and get good mileage.
Suggest you either suck it up and drive by the rules or move to a place where there are no rules.

BTW nobody in NJ drives at 55 except maybe on the streets where the limit is 25.

Holy cow.

I just got back from Germany, and people KNOW HOW TO DRIVE THERE.

We were driving a 75 HP car, that could barely do anything, but we avg'd 100 MPH for about 2 hours back to the airport on a Sunday morning no problem.

FIRST, and MOST IMPORTANTLY... people NEVER EVER sit in the left lane, and NEVER EVER EVER pass on the right.

If you are sitting in the left lane, you are very likely to get hit by an Audi with HID headlights going 200 KMH.

Germany aside, we were in France as well as Switzerland and the speedlimits were 130+ at least no the highways, if I recall correctly.

A few other things. The speed limits are so fast, there is no chance you are going to be eating or sleeping ... or even drinking (there are no cup holders in these cars, BTW) at the wheel. You drive, and pay a lot of attention to what you are doing because if you don't you will die.

Now, one of the great things is you pull over to stop, eat, rest, go to the bathroom, and you CAN get a decent coffee (or espresso) and a good croissant.

It is absolutely ridiculous that you can't go 100+MPH across Nevada on I-80, but I am not sure I agree around here. IF people followed the rules, then yes. But we have become accustomed to the fact that passing on the right is completely fine. In the states, I barely go 9 over... that would be going with the flow of traffic or on an open highway.

The highway limit in Jersey is 55?! What?! This is 2008! The limit on most streches of divided highway in Jersey is 65. You are about 10 years in the past...

What's wrong with passing on the right if the left lane is occupied with a Buick with a blue hair behind the wheel oblivious to the fact that they are driving at exactly the speed limit while traffic builds up behind them? I drove from Metro Scranton recently to State College via I-80, and for about ten miles there were two tractor-trailers driving side by side doing 50. This "vigilante" act did nothing but OUTRAGE all of us that were piling up behind them, and we all did 85-90 once we finally DID make it past them to make up for lost time. I'd rather see the police pull over these left-lane lolly-gaggers who impede the flow of traffic so that we would not have to pass on the right.

It is NOT illegal to pass on the right of a multi lane highway.
Quote:
39:4-85. The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass at a safe distance to the left thereof and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle. If vehicles on the roadway are moving in two or more substantially continuous lines, the provisions of this paragraph and section 39:4-87 of this Title shall not be considered as prohibiting the vehicles in one line overtaking and passing the vehicles in another line either upon the right or left...
