Hi, my friend and i are thinking about moving to New Jersey from central ny state. We're looking for a coastal community that's an easy commute to NYC. We just need some towns even thirty minutes to the coast is okay but we'd like to be in a coastal community if possible. We're looking to rent an apt from an apartment complex if possible. We don't have to though. We're looking to spend around 700- 1000 for the apt or townhouse. Thanks for any info.

$1000 is realistic. You'll probably want to concentrate on Monmouth County but the closest you'll get to NYC is about 45 minutes by train. The ferry is 10 minutes quicker but it's prohibitively expensive (the cost of the monthly pass is close the lower end of your rental range).

Where are you coming from, Syracuse?

Places where you're likely to find what you're looking for: Eatontown, Long Branch, Highlands, Oakhurst and Wayside (both zip codes in Ocean Twp.), maybe parts of Middletown like Port Monmouth, Leonardo, etc. and you can always try Red Bank, you might find something reasonable on the west side of town.

All of these places are within 5 miles of the beach and are in the 60-75 minute commute range. If you head further south you'll find better rents but you'll be further away from the city.

yeah, i was going to say Bradley Beach, Avon, Belmar, Neptune City - even Spring Lake Heights but the commute to NYC is not fun. I did it from Allenhurst.

If I wasn't going broke paying for the ferry every month it would've been fine but the train to the PATH every morning just sucked the life out of me.

700-1000 and very close to NYC on the shore (if you mean the hudson)
then thats a fantasy.
Maybe Bayonne would be the closest safest place on the water place to NYC..

but other places with a decent distance from NYC is Belmar.. or around there

Can you do $1000/month in Old Bridge? I don't know what the rental market is like, but it's a reasonable bus commute into the city, and not far from the shore.

Train > Long Branch to NY Penn takes 100 minutes and 15.00$ one way. 425.00$ for a monthly. Probably is a bus , but that will take longer and might require a few transfers.

Better parts of Jersey City or Hoboken will cost you ~$2K in rent for a small 1br.

If you're looking to rent after the summer beach season a large number of places get advertised for Sept 1 to next summer at reasonably low prices but yes the train ride in has a bunch of stops so it takes a while. Check the sched for details.
