My girlfriend just got a job in Pine Brook/Montville. We live on Long Island now and she has been commuting about 5 hrs a day. We need to find a place fast. We stayed at a hotel in Morristown and she fell in love with the area, but it is looking like that may be too expensive for the nice part. We just know nothing about any other towns. Any recommendations? We are looking to spend probably 1400 a month or so. Are there places in the area similar to Morristown as far as the bars restaurants etc?

Try the "Bloomfield Avenue corridor" (close to the avenue as possible) in West Caldwell/Caldwell/Verona. You won't be disappointed. Do a mapquest and see where and what I am talking about. If you are on or close to the avenue you can WALK to bars, coffee shops, diners, pizza/sub shops, and good restuarants.

All she would have to do is drive UP bloomfield avenue in AM onto Rt46 to Pine Brook/Montville and reverse in PM. A "cakewalk" IMO.

If I was in your shoes I would go with Verona close to the avenue and Verona Park. They have awesome condo/TH style apartments (two separate developments) off Lynn Drive behind the Verona FD, set back from the avenue (not too far nor too close). These specific units are in those free apt. guides they give out in the local supermarkets.

BTW You'd be eating like gavones every week with all the awesome places they have there. LMAO!!! Go check it out.

What about the surrounding areas, near Morristown? Did you get to look around outside of Morristown at all? As far as what's similar and nearby, I am not sure exactly what would fit. Check out Florham Park. I don't know that it's so similar to Morristown in "feel" but then again, Morristown is perhaps unique in that respect. Further away from Morristown, you have Ridgewood -- which I would say is similar to Morristown, very similar. Ridgewood doesn't have any "bad" areas per se. However, anything that's truly similar might considered to be "expensive" so to speak.

Mountain Lakes is a nice town. It's much closer to Montville than Morristown is. There are others as well. I am sure others will chime in on this.

Where are you going to be commuting to, if at all?

Thanks! She works for Bayer Pharmaceuticals in the drug safety field.

We would love to rent a condo/apartment complex, but we have a small dog and that has been limiting our options. He doesn't shed, bark or cause any problems whatsoever but that doesn't seem to matter much. She is commuting 5 hrs a day and is at home(awake) for 3 hrs tops, so it is driving her insane. It has been so frustrating so far because we have no idea what areas are nice.

Not sure yet, I will have to find a job once we move. Somebody told me that Montclair and Parsippany are nice?

A good industry (i.e. FDA) to be in considering the economy right now.

Offer a higher security deposit (above the norm 1.5-3x) or even "pet rent". Let them put the security deposit into a "high yield" CD or MM such as Hudson City Savings. Money talks (BS Walks). If you never ask the answer is always no. Don't let any property manager/landlord tell you "it is what it is".

Yes on Montclair but a little further commute (still can be done from RT46 or Bloomfield Avenue). Montclair is EXPENSIVE because its a NYC commuter town. Worth taking a look to make notes.

Parsippany I would avoid if I was in your shoes. Maybe some parts are nice for a married family, with kids, and house of their own. You can do MUCH better than Parsippany.

EANJ is steering you off path with references to Mountain Lakes (VERY pricy, no bars/restuarants) and Ridgewood (further out/EXTREMELY pricy). These blow your budget, esp. Ridgewood w/commute.

Your "key parameters"
1. commute by CAR to Pine Brook/Montville. Closer the better?
2. close to Morristown and/or "Morristown-like towns"
3. Budget of 1400/month for a rental (w/pet)
4. Walk-ability to bars, restaurants, etc.

I still say stick with Verona, Caldwell, and West Caldwell.
The link for the 2 Verona apartments is within your budget.

Hi OpieAnthony, I just assisted a couple moving out from the city and looking for a more urban/suburban setting. We focused on Summit and Westfield, and then ended up in Chatham - they too had dogs, two of them and that made the search a bit more challenging. But we found them a great place and they are very happy.

Morristown is a great spot - I can understand why you like it so much. A quick search shows that there are not a lot of choices in your price range but I did come upon one in Morristown that is just under $1,400, and indicated that a small dog is ok! There are options, in the area you like and the price you can afford, but they will be few and far between.

Incidentally rentals are moving quickly and so when you do find something that is suitable, be prepared to move promptly.
