I generally don't break out the attitude unless absolutely necessary. I don't feel like I have an accent at all, or if so VERY slight, but I still am apparently easily identified as a Northerner.
It's not like I run around shouting at people or anything. But I guess the fact that I can be quite abrupt without realizing it can come off as "rude" when I'm not at home.
That's funny. I also do not believe I have any accent. I lived the first 36 or so years of my life in central Jersey and I think we all talk boring and plain.
Yet every once in a while far from New Jersey some one hears me talking and points at me and says "You are from Joisey"
Regarding the OP: not sure if I'd call that an attitude. You assertively told someone that they needed to respect you. Good for you on that!
To me, when many people talk about "Jersey attitude" they're talking about a loudmouthed arrogance or outright, 'in your face' rudeness that some people are famous for. Nothing wrong with being blunt or assertive, but I think a lot of people mistake "Jersey attitude" for pure trashiness, which eventually (hopefully) they'll grow out of.
I don't have the "Jersey 'tude" in day to day life. When pushed, maybe. Otherwise, I'm pretty calm and even tempered overall. When I traveled throughout the Midwest a lot of ppl thought I was from Georgia.

Tahiti....don'tbe so modest..I see the Jersey tude in some of your posts..be proud girl!!
I'm usually a nice person (or so I'd like to think of myself as one) wherever I go. I'm usually not very confrontational with strangers (I'm a big mouth around my family and friends) unless you mess with my children or are completely in the wrong for something, or really push my buttons since I'm a Cancer (emotional). With that said, I have noticed however, that here, I get road rage more easily, I curse off people more (with my windows up of course lol), I'm definitely more on edge than I am elsewhere. I've been to quite a few states in this country and can honestly say, I have never, ever had a problem with anyone in any of those states. No road rage, that's for sure and when I was younger (during my teen attitude prime) I actually made several friends from out-of-state. I think, that while we have some very beautiful qualities in this state, we are uptight as a whole...we're too fast-paced and we can't even deal with ourselves half the time, that's why we have that rep. Slow down Jersey!!!!
