I just discovered and joined this group, which has been very helpful and enlightening! My husband, daughter, and I currently live in Hoboken, and similar to others, we'd eventually like more space and better schools. Hence the research on NJ towns has begun! (We're a little clueless, as we were raised in other parts of the country). At this time we are considering several towns, but I'm wondering what the commute is like from Cranford, Westfield, and Scotch Plains? My husband works on Wall St., so he is thinking of driving to Newark Penn Station, parking, and taking the PATH to WTC. Does anyone do this from these towns? How long does it take? I noticed that a few of you make this commute from Madison and New Providence, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much this reduces commuting time (instead of two hours by train!).
Also, what is the parking like at the train station in Cranford?
Finally, if you commute from Scotch Plains, is it possible to take the train from Fanwood? (I'm not a big fan of buses) . Are there enough spaces for residents and non-residents?

Thanks so much for any help!

If you are commuting from Westfield, I would just take the train to Newark and switch off to the PATH. The trains run pretty frequently to Westfield so there is no benefit to driving. I live in New Providence and I drive to Newark because trains run less frequently and I make better time on Route 78.

That makes sense about Westfield, thanks. I suppose the same is for Cranford. Anybody commute from Scotch Plains then?
In Scotch Plains- you would use the Fanwood train station, which is on the same line as Westfield and Cranford.
The schools in all of these areas are not the same. Check out www.greatschools.net. We live in Westfield, if you can afford it - it is a great town....
Hi NJMOM8,
I created new thread seems not so many are interested. I did not get much response. I copy it to here. Would you please give me your input?
I might take a job in Rahway. My daughter is turning 16. We may need add another car. I know that the car sale tax in NJ is 7%, our state now is 3%. I read on some website if you buying a hybrid car in NJ, you do not have to pay sale tax. Is that true? I did not see this anywhere in DMV website. Also how is the public transportation there? Do we need 3 cars in one house? Say if we live in Westfields and I work in Rahway. My wife will work. My teenager goes to high school may work part-timely. Does she need a car?
Thanks

If you are going to be working in Rahway you
should drive around the different sections to get to know the town
You might even like what you see and decide on buying a home here.
But as far as Westfield goes that is a real
Beauty of a town with a great downtown
Thanks Brian. Living in Westfield is one of our options. Since my wife will have potential job near Montgomery. Do you think it is possible to commute from Montgomery? Is there any reasonable train or bus route?

Montgomery is about 30 miles from westfield, I could not find any buses
that went that way direct and the nearest train station is in raritan
But that means you would have to take the train from westfiled to newark
and switch to the raritan line ,but you still have the problem of getting to Montgomery when you get off the train!

The closest train station to Montgomery is Princeton Junction, about 25 minutes away if you count on traffic and does not tun on Westfield's line. You are better off driving to Montgomery, which would take around an hour.
