We're thinking of moving to Hoboken (currently live in LA). I would be commuting to Princeton 4-5 days a week and my husband to NYC. We'd love to live close to Manhattan. It looks like the commute from Hoboken to Princeton by car would be about 1 hour, and a little more by train. Is this true?? Does anyone do this, and if so, how bad is it?? Thanks!

I used to do this on weekends when I lived in Hoboken and would visit my mom in Princeton. I live in New Providence now and also visit Princeton from time-to-time now for my job. The rush hour commute would probably be closer to 1.5 hours driving since you really can't reach Princeton from the major freeways.
Taking the train won't be much better. The NE Corridor line does not go to Hoboken. You would have to take the PATH to Newark Penn Station (about 35 minutes because of switching) and then take NJ Transit from Newark Penn (45 minutes). Either way, it would be in excess of an hour.
You should consider hoing a little further south, maybe Union or north Middlesex so you both can have commutes at about 20 miles. You are currently looking at one person (working in Manhattan) having to go only 5 miles, while the person going to Princeton has about 45 miles.
Did this commute from 1998 to 2001. Much of it is reverse commute. I could do it in about 60-65 minutes to Skillman, just north of Princeton. Turnpike part was definitely reverse but once you get to route 1 it's traffic either way.
always seemed to be about 10-15 minutes longer going home, despite me finding several creative ways to avoid the Holland Tunnel traffic.
Agreed. Thinking back to when I lived up that way and did the Princeton drive a few times, it took a little over an hour. Route 1 can be a mess, and that's where you'd run into problems.
acctually, i would suggest you move to princeton area, where you can drive to princeton borough, assuming you are working there, and you husband can take nj transit from princeton junction to manhattan in 1 hour 10 minutes. i live in this area and like it very much.
