I grew up in NJ in the 60s and 70s, and it was def an easier trick economically to raise a family there. The whole region was exploding, jobs were everywhere, (athough I'm sure there were some tough patches) there was social mobility, something that has petrified during the last gilded age.
My hubby and I left NJ 8 years ago. He was thrilled, me not so much. But then again I'm a Taurus.... And I love coming here and talking with people who know what NJ is all about!

I left and have not looked back. Yes , I come to this board but my son is still in NJ, which may soon change, and I do still work for a Travel Agency in NJ.
Reasons I'm not looking back:
Husbands Commute, now 20-25 min-was 1 Hour going-2 hours back
No State Income tax, including on my savings
$3500 real estate tax on a 4500 sq ft house, which I paid less for than the house I sold in NJ.
Airport-20 min from house
Downtown which has THE TPAC(broadway plays) Symphony, Opera, Art Museums, Clubs with all kinds of music-15 min away
Inexpensive State University system
Hope Schloship- which my daughter recieves for getting a 3.0 or better
Calmer Less Hectic life
NO Toll Booths---Now- Someone on the TN board who is formally from NJ, HE and I were planning to put up toll booths and keep the money, LOL
Also, Mostly all Gas Heat. No oil tanks leaking.
No low groundwater table, its solid rock
As far as Pizza goes, we have Brooklyn Transplants that own Pizza restaurants here.
We have Chicago Transplants that make the deep dish ones also.

You also have good and old Bobbie's Dairy Dip owned by musician Greg Trooper and his wife Claire from Little Silver and Brooklyn respectively. Supposedly a legendary Nashville dive and lunch spot.

Funny, I think back to the day I left, I did look back, the minute I left NJ. I looked in the rear view mirror at the toll booth, shook my head thought "I even had to pay to leave". I then had a sense a relief that I was doing the right thing. I knew it wasn't going to be the last toll I would ever pay in NJ, but it just summed up what I hated about the state. The whole "just one more dollar mentality". When does it end?

Many of us spend time on several boards, states we lived in, states we are looking to move into, states we spend part of the year in, for many reasons. People read the NJ board who never lived here, others read it because they may be able to add something, others out of simple curiousity.
We moved out of NJ after living there for many years and are quite happy with our decision. We return twice a year for a medical reason and in all honesty, the traffic and congestion, rudeness in retail stores and especially drivers, makes us very happy to return to the quiet life.

Rudeness in retail stores? Wow we experience the total opposite. We were back in South Jersey earlier this month and in the Cherry Hill mall and while the mall was busy-nothing but friendliness. The retail workers in NJ are certainly friendlier than the retail workers up here in NH. People in NJ are much friendlier and polite in my opinion. We go back home to NJ several times a year and always notice this.
