Hi everyone, I'm looking for some info on NJ traffic patterns. Obviously traffic must be worse going north on 95 in mornings and south in evenings, but what about the reverse? If I drive S on 95 from Hoboken, and then S on Rt. 1 to get to Princeton, would that be a bad commute in the morning? I'm in CA and am trying to get a sense of NJ traffic flows. Thanks!!

Route 1 is terrible--it's MUCH worse going north towards New York than south (away from the Turnpike), but don't assume it will be smooth sailing going south. Also keep in mind the construction on Route 18 (which you must take to get from the Turnpike to Route 1) and the delays that can cause.
Also keep in mind that at the end of your commute home to Hoboken you will get caught in the Holland Tunnel traffic most of the time (even though it's going the other direction). And there is roadwork underway on the Route 139/1&9 (Holland Tunnel connector) so that may cause a bit of delay too.
Finally, remember that Route 1 does not run through Princeton itself, you will have to cut over if you are going into the town.
I would guess you could get from Hoboken to Princeton Junction/Plainsboro in a bit over an hour in the mornings most of the time, but probably would take 1.25 at least hours to get home.
It's still much better reverse commuting than driving from Princeton to NYC though!
Anything gowing towards NYC in the morning and moving away from NYC in the evenings will be tough. Going against the flow of traffic is typically the best bet. Example: I live 50 miles away from my office. Takes me about 45 min to get there in the morning during rush hour as long as there are no accidents/rubbernecking/idiotsnotpayingattentiontotheroad because I am going north west away from NYC.
We have left AC at 6 am heading towards NYC hoping to beat traffic - HAHAHA! We wait there until 8:30 now. NJ has traffic - some of it heads towards NYC, some of it towards Phila. But it's heading somewhere. Stay home between 6 am and 9 am and between 3 pm and 7pm. That's the NY/NJ/CT Rush "hour". Oh, and high schools get out around 2 pm, so get out of their way!
Hoboken to Princeton? Nasty commute and long. Route 1 is a parking lot with lots of traffic and the traffic lights are bad too. You can stay at one traffic light for a couple cycles.
If you are moving to NJ to work in Princeton, why not live near Princeton?
