It all depends on the area.
I've lived in Union county all of my life, so moving to south Jersey with slabs / crawl spaces wasn't easy.
It was very common though, the way we dealt with it was looking for a house with a garage or a nice sized attic that had flooring or could have flooring. The last house I had had no garage but a full L-shaped attic.

It's very much a local thing. If yours is the only house in town without a basement, then it will be a big drawback, both in price and the time it will take to sell it. If, on the other hand, most homes are on slabs, then that fact will not have much of an effect. Assuming, of course, the houses in town are selling at all.
Also, if the house you are looking at is uncommon in that most others have basements and it does not, you should expect to PAY significantly less for it than for a similar house with a basement.
