My Fiance and I are looking to buy our first home. There is one on the market that would easily sell for 400K+ in a town like Kenilworth, Cranford..etc. 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, huge yard, deck, finished basment, everything is brand new, train to NYC walking distance, etc...owners just moved out are willing to go as low as $340K. I is not very far from Route 1.

Anyone know much about this area? WE drove around and some parts look ****ty but the street the house is on is nice (cul-de-sac). We also stumbled upon a small trailer park (yikes).

Let me know if this town is garbage or anything you know about it. I am familiar with Colonia & Woodbridge Proper which seem to be the much nicer areas of Woodbridge.

I'm from Union County and can't imagine this town being anything as "bad" as Elizabeth or Roselle...right?

Please be honest
thanks

While I don't think it is as bad as Elizabeth, I wouldn't be begging to get into Avenel either.

When things are cheaper, sadly, usually there is a reason.

Having grown up in Avenel. and having my mother just recently move from there (thank god) I can say that it's not as bad as Elizabeth, but it's not someplace I'd spend $340k to live. The area used to be a nice, blue collar neighborhood where everyone knew the neighbors and the kids could roam the neighborhood with nothing to worry about. Over the years it's gone downhill. There are a few streets that are OK, but they're few and far between. If you let me know what street you're looking at I can get more specific.

How true. Bob and I grew up a couple blocks from eachother. I thought it was crappy then, its far worse now. There is almost no English (our official language) spoken anywhere. Unlike Bob, I still am not able to get my Mom to leave there. There are lots of old timers who spent their entire lives there as well as the newcomers which are almost all from India or Pakistan.

I feel it is not a nice place to bring up kids. Not really because the crime is bad because it is no worse then any other place, but for a kid there is just nothing to do. Avenel is pretty much a bedroom community.

In short time they will be tearing down the old General Dynamics and putting in a couple thousand homes on all that land. You can bet they wont be cheap homes so it may change the whole feel of the town.

What street are you looking at?

Avenel will never again be Avenel without Cameo, Metros and Murrys.

Ok Monica Ct is not really an ugly area. But it is close to a heavy industrial area and yes those grotesque trailers. But I never heard of any trouble coming from them. The trucking company across the street if its still there is no bother either.

I do advise you to park your car in front of the house, shut your engine off and listen. You are maybe a quarter mile from Rt 1 and it is very noisy especially during rush hour. You are also a quarter mile from the General Dynamics property I mentioned in my last post. That should be no bother either.

The good news is you are close to everything. If your kids are 6th grade or under they have a very short walk to Avenel 4&5 school. I think the Junior high has closed and has been been turned into offices. I have no idea where the JH kids go now.

The whole area is all cape cods but I believe your street is colonials and newer..... built just after WW2 so the returning Soldiers had homes to go to. All are 50 X 100 lots so no privacy. You will be under the govt rule of Woodbridge TSWP which is not all that bad either.

Good luck to you !!
