Commuting through Penn Station every day is hell on earth, especially on the way home. And NJ Transit trains can have frustrating delays. It's a real grind.

If someone doesn't crave the house and yard, etc., they would be miserable with this daily commute.

Aside from the "grind" of Penn Station, there are good schools in Westfield, Cranford, and Scotch Plains. All of them have their own train line too. You would have to change in Newark, though.

It's certainly possible, because "various parts of NYC" can include midtown and other areas much closer to Penn Station or WTC. But I do have to say that for a commute to Wall St. from either Maplewood or South Orange, you're looking at the same 75 - 90 minute commute each way (I did this exact commute for many years).

There are many nice towns with good school districts within a roughly 75 - 90 minute one-way commute to Wall St., and they include all of the towns that have been mentioned in this thread, and many others. But just be prepared for the reality of the commute if you decide to live in any of these towns.

Best advice would be to actually do a few test runs during the morning/evening based on any town you are seriously considering.

Good luck!

Truer words were never spoke. Unless you are in Hoboken or Jersey City, the idea of an hour from your house to your desk in Manhattan is a pipe dream. I do wish my fellow agents would stop saying it, it degrades the profession.

I think all agents, to get their license, should be dropped off 10 minutes from a train station in Westfield or Ridgewood or wherever and told to make it to a desk in the WFC or Empire State Building in one hour. It might open some eyes and prevent the constant hype of short commutes.

There is no easy commute to Manhattan and there never will be. Even WITHIN Manhattan it can take forever to move around.

God, you're reminding of someone I used to work with who claimed it was an hour from Princeton to NYC door to door!

It took me almost an hour door to door when I lived in Hoboken. A half hour when I lived in Manhattan.

You can be assured of a short commute in NY only when you live within easy walking distance.
