So I'm in Cliffside Park right now, and the town STRONGLY smells of syrup. I called a family member about 1/2 a mile away and she can also strongly smell the syrup aroma brewing in the air. My windows aren't even open.

When we were kids, there was a heartily believed urban legend that said the Pfister plant (sp?) in Ridgefield would give off gases that smelled like syrup. Now the plant is not only closed, but demolished.

Any ideas? Anyone in these towns ever smell this before? Know what it is?

Does it smell like maple syrup? There was an incident a few years ago in Manhattan and in Hudson County where there was a mysterious smell of maple syrup. Everyone was pretty freaked out.

I don't think the mystery was ever solved.

Yes, maple syrup.

I've been googling and found the incident you're referencing. It seems that it's happened in the past too, but no one is able to answer it.

The first few minutes were heavenly...mmm... now I just want to gag!

It smells awful. Once or twice a month, it smells like this is Cliffside Park. Never smelled this prior to moving to Cliffside a few months ago. Wish someone would track down the cause. I'm surprised none of the community newspapers runs an article on this stench.

There is a certain section in Paterson that smells like maple syrup too! IDK where it comes from! It smells good and sweet for about 2 minutes; then it gets nauseating.

Only in NJ will you find so many smells in the air, LOL.

NY Times Article from this morning:

Mysterious Sweet Smell From 2005 Returns to Manhattan
By TRYMAINE LEE
Published: January 6, 2009
The mysterious sweet smell that swept over parts of the city more than three years ago returned on Monday night.
The city’s 311 information line was flooded with callers reporting the smell of maple syrup, or something like it, wafting across several neighborhoods, a spokesman for the Office of Emergency Management said.
Nearly all of the calls — 35 in just a few hours — came from areas in Manhattan, the spokesman said, although one caller reported smelling the sweet scent across the East River in Queens.
Department of Environmental Protection agency investigators were searching for the source of the smell late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, the agency’s spokesman said.
The strange, syrupy scent has descended on parts of New York City and New Jersey at least three times before. Beginning in the fall of 2005, people in various areas of the city and nearby New Jersey reported the scent.
Some have theorized that the smell came from New Jersey. Others theorized that it was generated by a candy factory in Manhattan. There were also fears that the odor was linked to an act of terrorism.
Officials ruled the odor harmless but never solved the mystery of its origin.
