We will be relocating to the area for a job in the Bronx. I was wondering what towns are the best for our situation in Bergen county.

Here are the things we are looking for:
- within half hour drive to NE Bronx.
- Buy a home for around 400K (give or take). 3 bed 2 bath, not too old
- Live in a walkable downtown area (side walks so we can walk from home to a grocery store)
- Low crime
- Good schools
- Plenty of green space
- Not an area full of "strip malls"

We are both in our 30ies and are expecting a baby.

Thanks!

Will that sought-after half hour drive to NE Bronx be during rush hour?

Sometimes, however the work schedule will be flexable so driving there after or before may be an option.

I can't say I have ever made the drive from Bergen County to NE Bronx during commuting hours, but I would offer a suggestion that you consider suburban NY (Westchester County) and Connecticut as well -- you would have more options for driving (i.e., wouldn't necessarily be bottlenecked at a bridge like the GWB) and the Metro-North train lines that come in from Westchester and CT I believe would get you closer to your destination via public transportation much more easily.

Just a thought.

Thanks Lusitan,

We actually have been planing to go to Westchester County but home prices are just so expensive and it seems like they are more affordable in some parts of Bergen.

Are Westwood and Hillsdale considered pretty rural or do they have alot of shopping/activities around? Does it tend to be more large highways or are there streets with sidewalks?

^^^

No place in Bergen is rural anymore

if you want a house for 400K stay south of Rte 4

try hackensack, teaneck, englewood, cliffside park, ridgefield, ridgefield park, leonia
