Native New Yorker you would think I know something about New Jersey neighborhoods but alas, I don't.
I am looking to rent a studio apt for a 1 year lease with a max $1,000 rent. I have looked at some areas and really liked North Bergen, but it doesn't seem anything is available. I work in mid town manhattan, could someone suggest a nice/safe place to look?
p.s. I have 1 cat, so I need to find a place that accepts pets.
*Read this list so you are aware of what should be included if you are moving from out of area and coming to New Jersey.

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) Somewhere safe, clean and that has some public transportation because I don't have a car.
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) Clean, safe, public transportation
Look in Rahway , Linden , Edison , Bloomfield , Kearny , East Newark , Hackensack , Union City , Bayonne for starters...you might have to look hard. All the ex-New Yorkers are moving over pushing up prices , Downtown Newark has increased 400$+ in 3 years. There are a few gritty blocks in each of those cities listed above but nothing to bad.
Look in Bayonne, it's one of the few places that meets your budget where you can live without a car.
