Boonton Twsp, Randolph, I'd go no further west than Long Valley, more towards Rt 46 as opposed to towards Hunterdon Cnty. I'm in LV, my husband works in Paterson, and the commute is average 50 minutes.
ETA - I just saw the 30 min commute req't - scratch LV. Sorry.
Long Valley would be OK. I didn't see the 30 minute commute requirement. That's not reasonable moving up that way. You can do say Lebanon or Clinton in Hunterdon well under an hour, especially if you leave early. In that part of NJ, 45 minutes to an hour is a reasonable commute.

How? I'm closer than Lebanon and Clinton, and like I said, it takes my husband 50 minutes average leaving at 6:20am and he doesn't hit much traffic. clinton is 50 miles from paterson,
You guys are doing something wrong and hitting local traffic. I did Moorestown to Madison, (78 miles) in less than an hour and a half in the morning. About an hour 40 coming home. Doing it from 78 would be a walk in the park.
FYI, Google Maps - Clinton to Paterson is 55 minutes and that's assuming normal traffic patterns. Leaving early, it should be done in 45 minutes possibly less.
Thanks for the tips on the Caldwells and Fairfield area. I am looking into them and they seem to have some good schools. I just dont know about the traffic from there to Patterson.
Yes I was looking up Hunterdon County and that seems a little far out. Right now my husbands commute is 1.5 hrs on a good day. He would love to be 15 minutes or less from work but we are willing to do 30 minutes.
Anyone know anything about Short Hills, Chatham, Summit?
Whats wrong with Bergen county? I saw some areas have better schools than others. And that area seems to be the closest to my husbands work. Heard it is quite overpopulated though!
Short Hills, Chatham and Summit are great, throw in Madison too. Even Morristown or Florham Park. But in those areas you'll be hard pressed to find something decent at 500K but perhaps it is possible. The commutes would be good. Great schools.
Bergen has had its day, it's on the decline, the money continue to move west and south.

It could, MR, but I'll tell you what: you are leaving zero margin for error there. The 287-78 interchange sometimes has accidents, which blows that commute up. In fact, any accident along that road is going to compromise that commute. Additionally, there are sun glare considerations part of the year that you don't encounter on the south to north commutes.
If commuting is an issue, I would not go further than the 202 exit of Rt 80. West of there the traffic is a bear. You should check out Parsippany. There are a number of areas that would fit your budget and the schools are good.
Pequannock, Pompton Plains, Lincoln Park, Montville/Towaco/Pine Brook all have nice areas in the OP price range, good schools (athough Peq/PP are having some issues with the school board) and are quick rides to Paterson.
