Hello, my husband and I will be moving to New Jersey this summer and we would like suggestions on where to live. His company is located in Somerset. We are a both young, 32, and have a baby on the way. This is a two year assignment so we don't need to be close to schools (I will be home with our baby). We want to live in a nice place (upated/not a lot of work)...it does not have to be large... 2 or 3 bedroom (home, townhome, condo), with an easy commute for him (no more than 30 minutes to Somerset), but close to restaurants/shopping, and a nice friendly neighborhood. We are hoping for somewhere where we are also close enough to take day trips to NY on the weekends ...ANY suggestions?? Our budget is between 300K-400K.

My area would be perfect for you! You can buy a nice house for 300 to 400. I just purchased "brand new const"..fully upgraded for 379k! You can get a townhouse out here..brand new for half that price. Somerset is about a 30 to 40 min commute. Greenwich Twp. in Warren County - just off of Rt. 78. Tons of shopping plus we are only 5 mins. from tons more shopping in PA.

Have you looked into Metuchen? Its about 15 minutes from Somerset and has great access to the city. My cousin lives there and commutes everyday into the city for work.

Unless you're planning to stay in NJ. I would think it would be more cost effective to rent for 2 years rather than by a home. No closing costs and no house to sell when you are ready to leave. I should think you could rent a great house or townhouse in your budget. Bridgewater has a huge mall.

Take a look on craigslist for homes in Somerset County. Nothing in the county itself will be more than 30 minutes from the town of Somerset.

Best of luck and welcome to NJ.
