My family is possibly moving to South NJ this summer from Texas. One of the places we have found homes that seemed reasonable in price was Tabernacle. Does anyone have any information about the property taxes, schools, atmosphere, etc. My husband would be driving to Piscataway to work, how would the traffic be?

Tabernacle to Piscataway? I'd NEVER do it, and I have a 60 mile commute each way today! Horrible, horrible commute. Turnpike is bad enough, but then you need to travel 287N for about 10+ miles which is a nightmare (that part alone could take 1 hr). Pay more for a house and live closer, seriously. I had a coworker who lived in Mt. Laurel and commuted to Piscataway (I worked there for 15 yrs) and he ended up buying a house closer - couldn't take it.
house approx $300,000 with around $6000 property taxes
if i'm wrong someone here will surely let me know, but i've got to be honest, unless you're willing to live in a condo or townhouse you're not going to find a house in that price range with a reasonable commute to piscataway. my brother lives in kendall park (middlesex cnty, same as piscataway) in a 2 bdrm townhome that probably goes for about $300K right now. luckily his taxes aren't near $6K.
Try Freehold, NJ. There are some really nice neighborhoods there. The commute wouldn't be as long as Tabernacle.
I live in Tabernacle now. Yes it is lovely, it's beautiful, nice and quiet, friendly people. But the commute from here to Piscataway would be a nightmare.

i seriously don't think you can get a house in freehold for $300K (one that is inhabitable anyway)...who knows, but I doubt it.
Do NOT live in Tabernacle and commute to Piscataway, like already said, just a nightmare. You could get a nice condo or town house, in a lot of areas for that price, but a house is pushing it.
The only place I can think of off hand and near there that maybe you could get a 3 bedroom house for 300,000 would be Manville. BUT if you're from Jersey, Manville doesn't always sit well as a place to live. It's suburban, but it gets flooded badly at times which I think has really helped to give it a bad reputation. But check it out for yourself, there are probably some outskirts maybe bordering Manville and another town that don't flood. Good luck.
I think Cranbury is a really nice area to raise a family, but with the budget you stated would have to go the townhouse or condo route.

I checked out some realty websites and found a few townhomes and even some single family homes in the $260-$325 range. Not many, but there are some.
