I live in rural northwest NJ and recently bought a home without a fireplace. The house is all electric and there is no natural gas in the area. I can't afford to install a new fireplace, either wood or propane. My house is in the woods and nothing would be better than a nice fire on a cold night.

I've been seeing gel fireplaces online, and on Amazon, and for the most part people really like them. You burn non-toxic canisters of gel and they are safe and ventless. They only put out 9,000 btu, just enough to take the chill out of the air in a small room- perfect for our situation.

Spring is almost here and the prices have really dropped. Anyone have any experience with these? I'm only looking for ambiance, not heat. How do they look?

I think you will end up spending a lot of money on the gel canisters. How much do those cost?

I live in Florida and bought an electric fireplace. It looks real and is great for taking the chill out, especially the tile floor. It doesn't cost anything to run. It has a blower in it or just the flames by itself. I'll bet this time of year you can get one pretty cheap. I bought one that I could stain the wood myself.

The canisters can be found for as cheap as $60 for a case of 24. The amount I would use would be 3-4 cases per winter. Not for heat, just ambiance when company comes over, on holidays, etc.

My question is do they look real? I've never been that into electric fireplaces because I like a real flame. Anyone have a gel fireplace?

I'd never heard of them. I think the ones with the ceramic logs look the best. It gives the flames something to move around. There's a few selections on YouTube.

I have a gel fireplace. Only use it for show basically but the gel you can get from home depot or lowes - it's also available online if you just do a google search for it. It can be pricey if you use your fireplace all the time, but since I don't - it's not really an issue.
