The university housing here consists of studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom apts. Studios start around $975 and 1 bedrooms begin at $1050. Most of the people that live here are current medical, dental, and graduate students. There are a few residents in the building and one attending residing here.
If you opt not to live in the dorms and you would like to live somewhere safe you have a few options:
1. Society Hill Newark - right across the street from the school and hospital...nice condos and townhomes, but they are not as secure as the housing the univ provides. I'm not sure if the 1-bedrooms, so you may need a roommate. 2-bedrooms places start around $1600.
2. Nutley/Clifton area - about a 10 minute drive north from the campus (w/o traffic). Suburban, safe, and relatively reasonable.
3. Montclair/West Orange/South Orange/Maplewood - a little further away and can be a pain in traffic (about 20 minute commute w/o), but much nicer than Newark, Nutley, Clifton. The price ranges vary so much that you need to look into it on your own.
4. Jersey City/Hoboken - you have the option to drive (20-30 mins) or take the PATH train. Jersey City is safer than Newark (although not by much), but you have to know what spots to live in. Hoboken is full of yuppies, very hip, but it will run you a few bucks. Just remember you will be on an intern salary buddy...
Those are your best bets within this vicinity. You want to be as close to UH as possible, honestly. You are going to be a new intern with call...nothing is more annoying than a long commute after working 36 hours straight. PM me if you need more specifics or just have ?s about UMDNJ-Newark in general.
