We are being relocated from a very family-friendly town in IL to the NY area. My husband will be working in Queens and we need to narrow our choices down (NY/NJ/CT). Westchester sounds nice but the tax rate is concerning, to put it lightly. Our price range is around $650K and the two most important criteria are: school system and commute to Queens (anything under an hour). I would really like to find a 4 bdrm house in a family friendly town that isn't congested (traffic-wise). Is this possible to find? If so, what towns (please include the states they are in) might come close? Thanks!
If your husband is working in Queens, NJ is the worst choice among NY/CT/NJ. Look in Westchester (taxes in NJ aren't any better, so you're not missing out on anything in that department by skipping NJ) and CT. You could also consider Long Island.

A NJ-to-Queens commute would be ugly.
I rarely agree with Lusitan, but this is one of those times. The only parts of NJ that are easily accessible to Queens aren't the areas you want to be living in.

Yes, I find myself forced to agree with Lusitan as well. Do not move to NJ and work in Queens.
Everyone is completely right about the NJ-Queens being your worst option. While I am new here on CD, I just wanted to add that Queens has one of the best public school districts in all of the five boroughs: District 26. It's not the beautiful burbs of Westchester, but the homes in Bayside, etc..are very cute "bungalows"/cape cods...You don't have to pay the "county" taxes like you do in Westchester and Nassau county. My DH works at WTC and we had looked at District 26, but the commute to WTC was not simple.
We have a longtime friend that has lived in Queens and LI all his life, if you like the burbs, LI is definetely suburbia. And it's easy to get to Queens.
Long Island is going to be your best bet for commute - but the tax base is pretty high there too... if not higher than some parts of NJ...
Best of luck in your search.
