By contrast, if they hire someone who was making $40k, they've got someone who made a move up, and is more likely to stay.

That's the thing. I am planning on staying, but I know when I get a job, there is no shame is starting lower and heading back up from there.

I guess I worded my response badly.

my buddy lost his job today... felt bad for him... his boss said the company was losing 15k a month.
