We go down to Wildwood for a weekend every year - it's really not that far, and I'm probably one of the furthest away on this board (~180 miles). If you don't like to drive, yeah, it can be a pain, but time it right and it's completely doable. With logic like yours, you'd never go to DC or Boston for the weekend, huh?
ETA, and here's how I go to wildwood:
local roads, 206, 202, 31, 195, 526, 537, pkwy
or local roads, 206, local roads, 18, pkwy (this is if I'm absolutely 100% certain the pkwy will be clear).
despite that route, I still don't think it's bad!
I actually drive to maryland every other weekend. Both routes seem to have many traffic lights like 206 537. 180 miles? Do you live in n.j.? One friday evening I by-passed the jammed GSP to get to Browns Mills and I had to take 3 or so highways just to reach exit 10 (all that driving and still in north jersey)
AT_LAST_2009........Your gonna get what you pay for here.Most nice places aren't cheap.Keep in mind w/ gas prices on the rise your extent of travel.Also some beach passes upwards to 7-10$ plus parking fees.
I like Point Pleasant. It has a nice boardwark with enough rides for the kids. Then, if you have someone with you to watch the kids, or if they are old enough to chill on their own, the Tiki Bar is a nice spot to go get a drink at night.
Belmar is also nice. No boardwalk though. I only go there when all I want to do is relax on the beach.
The best spot is Wildwood though. The boardwalk is huge and the kids will not be bored.

North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest beaches are free...just have to pay for parking If you are staying overnight, most places provide free parking too. A Shore View in North Wildwood is my place. Small traditional family motel.All rooms have kitchen set ups,and there are BBQ gas grills so you can cut the costs of eating out. Its literally steps to the beach on East 4th street, the beach is not crowded.And it has an elevator!
You can easily walk to the boards. Nothing fancy just clean and comfortable. Nice big patio deck where we eat outside most of the time and a pool for those who prefer their water without sand Its been our home away from home for years.Cape May is just a few miles if youd like to walk around and shop a bit, and AC 45 minutes tom gamble.
PS try the new "Sonics" resturant on Rio Grand.
