My husband and I are currently looking at houses in Bergen and Essex County. We have a child with autism and need to move to a place with a great school system and good services. Which County would be the best for that? We currently live in Morris County and are happy but my DH needs to be closer to NYC for his job. We are currently considering Rutherford, Lyndhurst, Hasbrouck Hts, West Caldwell, Verona, Cedar Grove, and possibly Parsippany-Troy Hills and Pine-brook (Morris County) if the commute isn't too long. We also have other children to so it would have to be a family friendly safe town. Thanks for any info.
Rutherford, Lyndhurst, and Hasbrouck Heights they have a decent autism program through the South Bergen Jointure School. My wife is a social worker at the school there and deals with some of the autistic children there. All the teachers are dedicated and they have 2 quality behaviorist.
We have an autistic son and we live in Westwood. Our 4 year old son is in a full day program at the Sullivan Center in Washington Township and we feel their program is very good there. Bergen County has top services.
Train from Westwood takes you into Hoboken or Secaucus for transfer into NYC. You can also drive in through the Palisades Parkway.
Try Mendham Township, the commute is only about 45 minutes to NYC and the public school got a blue ribbon award which is like the highest award a school can get. The services are great, and could easily help a kid with autism. Mendham though is pretty expensive so you may want to consider that.

West Caldwell has a great school system and a very good special needs program. The OT's in the West Caldwell district are the best. The OT who sees my sister's son has made such AMAZING improvements in so many areas. He's fabulous. He owns a clinic in West Caldwell and my nephew sees him in the clinic as well. The town is also great. It's a real town, not just a drive through like so many towns in Jersey. A real downtown and lots of community activities etc. Definitely worth a look. Property taxes are better in West Caldwell than Caldwell. North Caldwell is a different school district and they go to West Essex high school. Not good. And N. Caldwell is outrageously expensive but has very nice homes.
Also, I think you would need the flying time machine from BTTF2 to get to NYC in 45 minutes from Mendham.
