I think those "school budget" questions are a farce -- they're almost always voted down, yet the town will still pass a resolution (or something) after the vote, for nearly the same amount
NorthJersey.com: What happens when voters reject a school district's tax levy (http://www.northjersey.com/education/educationnews/Defeating_a_school_tax_levy_at_the_polls_is_just_t he_beginning.html - broken link)
Voters passed an $84.4 million budget and a $76.8 million tax levy, one of the largest in the county.
The vote was 1,724-1,087.
The sole candidate for reelection, Robert A. Hutton, got 1,888 votes. Hutton is vice president and controller of Bolger & Co. in Ridgewood.
Passage of the budget means the district can begin to place purchase orders for July delivery as soon as possible.
The district already had to cut $2.5 million to get the budget under the state cap.
"Because of the way we had to make significant dollar cuts to the budget, we feel we have already gone through a defeated budget," said schools Business Administrator Angelo DeSimone. "In that sense, that's what made it important to pass."
If the budget had failed, the district would have had to cut in areas it had considered during the budget process and rejected because they were too important.
