Living in Princeton, I'm proud to see our town is on the list. It certainly is well deserved.

I am never surprised by these NJ Monthly lists (Downtowns, Doctors, Lawyers, Schools). The list was entirely different last time, and will be entirely different next time. The #1 town this time will probably not even be on the list next time. How is that possible?

It's all just a bunch of marketing bs.

Given the positive press methinks Morristown will be the location of my next photo tour after I was so disappointed with Hackettstown.

I've noticed the opposite - they basically stay the same - especially dr's and schools. Now Newsweek's school rankings and Money Mag's best places to live? THOSE are complete BS!

The magazine highlights the following as having the best downtowns:

Cape May
Collingswood
Englewood
Haddonfield
Hoboken
Maplewood
Millville
Montclair
New Brunswick
Princeton
Red Bank
Ridgewood
Stone Harbor
Summit
Westfield

So, what do you think? Would you agree? I don't know all of these towns, but of those I do (Hoboken, Maplewood, Summit, and Westfield), I'd give a thumbs up!
What is there to do/see in Maplewood?

What about South Orange? I'm coming back up next month (for my third time in 6 months , and I'm trying to find nice towns, that I really haven't been to yet [I've been on the borders of SO and Maplewood - but I was in South Mountain Reservation - so I don't know if that really counts]) that are easily accessible from Newark (or better yet, West Orange, since that's where I stay [though I know most of the time anywhere I've gone, I have had to transfer in Newark]) by bus/train, or spending no more than 30.00-40.00 (before tip) on a cab.

Or, any recommendations for nice towns even outside of Essex that I could access by bus/train/or cab (below stated fare.)?

Well, if friendly.....cute ,and cozy, Hackettstown was disappointing. Don't turn left at the light past the firehouse. There was so much crime in that area when we were kids they told us not to drive through it.
Yes, you will find Victorians on Mills Street. My Mom lived there as a young adult. It has a nice courtyard area, and the best hospital. But, living there......is something I would never do.
I'd live in Hackettstown, but not Morristown.
I need the friendly, cute and cozy......the river......some fields nearby.....
less congestion.....Not so many highrises. A good town to work in, but.....not for living. IMO
