Sorry, there is not a list of good, bad, clearcut.
It doesn't exist.
You went to a lot of work to type that post.
There are many threads started here with the same basic question.
You have to state what area you are considering working in and it all goes from there and of course price range.
Somehow I think you already know this from looking at the post. I am just posting this for anyone else who might be newly lurking here.
If someone must have a car that will change the game.
Craigslist is the best place to look first.
Local papers are second.

Of course you will have to have roommates to survive in a retail job.
The suburbs are not really making sense for you in this instance.

@ cyntmac: Ahh, sorry. I guess this was a stupid question. Just... thought maybe someone could give me an idea, like... of absolute places to avoid and places that seem decent. I am going to have roommates. I tried to be as specific as possible about what I was looking for and what I could afford. Sorry. Does this forum allow deleting threads? I'll just delete this and try to find my answers elsewhere.

You are posing the question in a manner that makes it difficult to respond to. It wouldn't matter where you posted it.
Try craigslist first but even there you will not get an answer to this question.

Let's TRY to be nice.... (Tahiti, we miss ya...)

I have DM'd the OP and they really just need advice.

Let's not forget, as much fun as it is to have all us crazy Jerseyans fighting one another over gun control, political corruption, NJEA, property taxes and if it is pork roll or taylor ham.... the MAIN point of this board is to help those seeking advice about the area.

Not every thread is meant to spark a great debate.

Peace
